Because we don't chose our families, but only our friends and our pets, every day is an opportunity for tolerance, magnanimity. Some cruise through life with reckless abandon and arrogance, because that's what they know. I have come to accept that people aren't born bad. Generally. Some of the kindest people have become monsters because they experienced trauma that has been left unresolved, simply because they didn't have the right network of people who cared enough to help them through trauma. Conversely, some of the most arrogant people become better people because life has a habit of somewhere - some day - humbling you to a point where you see the necessity of changing tack! Africans need to move beyond the perfunctory notion of feeling extended family is the social safety net. Sometimes, our families create the worst within us, and sometimes, they perpetuate illogical wounds they expect their progeny to perpetuate. Not everyone can afford to go to a counsellor or a psychologist, so we just need to care more. If we truly want an equitable society, can we please check up on each other more often? People are going through trauma and problems everyday- yet showing up because they chose to. Not everyone is that strong, and sometimes even with the apparently strongest safety nets around us, we can crack, and slip into an abyss. Who do you need to call today? Don't think about it. Just call that friend! #JazzNightsJupiter isn't just about #Agenda2063. It's also a love story of repressed emotions; a story about unresolved and historical trauma that creates a monster, plus an important tale of balancing duty of fighting evil, and responsibility of caring for a sick parent who's lost touch with reality.
